WELCOME TO THE
2010 CALHOUN COUNTY FAIR
162Years of Tradition
Agriculture was foremost in the minds of Calhoun County’s settlers...hence the
beginnings of the fairs which have been held for over a century and a half.
The first fairs were held in various locations in the city until 1848 when the Calhoun County Agricultural Society reorganized the event and held the new gathering in 1849 on Capital Hill (which is now known as the fairgrounds) and made it a yearly event.
Everyone loved the Fair! Wheel of fortune, side shows, prize exhibits, produce, livestock, horse racing, games and much more. It became one of the main social gatherings of
the year. It was often the only time people in the more rural areas got a
chance to see old friends. Balloon ascensions, daredevil acts...
all became a part of “The Fair.”
